India Vs SL Cricket Match ODI Called Off, Bad Pitch At Delhi Kotla

The fifth and final one-day international between Sri Lanka and India was abandoned after 23.3 overs on Sunday due to the unfit nature of the pitch at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium. Sri Lanka had toiled on the tricky surface to reach 83 for five after being put in to bat in foggy conditions when the match was called off after the pitch was deemed too dangerous to play on due to unpredictable bounce.

Tillakaratne Dilshan (31) suffered a painful blow on his left elbow off paceman Ashish Nehra, but bravely carried on after treatment before he fell to spearhead fast bowler Zaheer Khan, Sanath Jayasuriya (20), celebrating his 21st year in international cricket, suffered a blow on his finger when he fended at debutant paceman Sudeep Tyagi as some deliveries leapt up from a good length while others kept low.

Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and sent Sri Lanka in to bat in the fifth and final one-day international. India, enjoying an unassailable 3-1 lead in the series, rested star batsman Sachin Tendulkar and brought in seamer Sudeep Tyagi for his one-day debut.

All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja produced his career-best four-wicket haul as India bundled out Sri Lanka for a modest 239 in their third One-Day International at Barabati Stadium on Monday.

Electing to bat, Sri Lanka made a rousing start before they lost way in the middle overs as Indian slow bowlers brought themselves back into the game.

Jadeja claimed four for 32 - his best from 12 ODIs - while Ashish Nehra and Ishant Sharma took two wickets apiece to bring an end to Sri Lanka innings in 44.2 overs.

Upul Tharanga (73) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (41) gave Sri Lanka a perfect start going with a run rate in an excess of 10. Captain Kumar Sangakkara (46) then stood in a 100 run partnership with Tharanga as the Lankans looked set for a big score before the Indians came back strongly.

Sri Lanka scored 14 runs from the first over from Zaheer Khan, who struggled with his line with four wides. Runs came at ease for Sri Lanka who raced to 50 in 3.4 overs with Dilshan and Tharanga not giving time for Zaheer and Ishant Shrarma to settle down.

Zaheer conceded 26 runs from his first two overs before Sehwag brought in Ashish Nehra in the fifth over.

Nehra managed to curb Tharanga's strokeplay with four dot balls and his tight over almost gave India the breakthrough in the form of a suicidal run-out of Dilshan.

But Dinesh Karthik, who kept the wickets in place of regular captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, horribly messed it up after neatly collecting it.

The wicketkeeper had plenty of time to run out Dilshan but he missed the stumps completely from a close-in throw.

RAJKOT, India — India overcame a brilliant century by Tillakaratne Dilshan to defeat Sri Lanka by three runs in a dramatic start to the five-match one-day series on Tuesday.

Dilshan made 160 off 124 balls as the tourists made a spirited effort to surpass India's highest one-day total of 414-7, before falling agonisingly short in a high-scoring thriller.

Sri Lanka were on their way to recording the second highest run chase in one-day history when they began the penultimate over needing 15 to win off the last 12 balls with five wickets in hand.

But pace spearhead Zaheer Khan conceded just four runs and seamer Ashish Nehra gave away seven runs in the final over to seal India's win.

Three wickets fell in the last two overs, including that of Thilina Kandamby (24) and Angelo Mathews (38), to end Sri Lanka's desperate bid to record a famous win.

The biggest chase in one-day history stands in the name of South Africa, who made 438-9 to defeat Australia at the Wanderers in Johannesburg on March 12, 2006.

Earlier, Virender Sehwag smashed 146 off 102 balls on a ground with shorter boundaries as India surpassed their previous one-day record of 413-5 against Bermuda in the 2007 World Cup in the Caribbean.

Sri Lanka made a spectacular chase of the daunting target as Dilshan and Upul Tharanga (67) hammered 188 for the first wicket in 24 overs.

Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara propelled Sri Lanka further with a blistering 90 off 43 balls that contained 10 fours and five sixes.

Sangakkara and Dilshan added 128 for the second wicket from just 75 balls to lift the tourists to a comfortable 316-1 by the 37th over, when India hit back with four wickets in the space of 29 runs.

Sangakkara was caught on the square-leg fence off seamer Praveen Kumar, before off-spinner Harbhajan Singh had Sanath Jayasuriya stumped and then bowled danger man Dilshan in successive overs.

Mahela Jayawardena was run out for three attempting a second run, but Thilina Kandamby and Mathews put on 56 for the sixth wicket to keep the tourists' hopes alive.

The swashbuckling Sehwag hit 17 boundaries and six sixes after the tourists won the toss and elected to field in good batting conditions.

The fifth-highest total in one-day cricket was fuelled by a blazing opening stand of 153 in 20 overs by Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar.

Tendulkar, the world's leading Test and one-day batsman, made 69 off 63 balls with 10 fours and a six before he was bowled by Dilhara Fernando.
