NZ beat Pakistan by 32 runs at Dunedin

Dunedin: Daniel Vettori took a catch off his own bowling to dismiss Mohammad Aamer and help New Zealand to a 32-run victory over Pakistan in the first Test.

Three quick wickets swung the momentum back in New Zealand’s favour as the visiting Pakistan team chased a target of 251 to win the first Test against New Zealand and take a 1-0 lead in the series.

Comeback man Shane Bond struck just as the partnership between the Akmal brothers was looking threatening.

Bond caught Umar Akmal of his own bowling for 75 while O’Brien joined him a little while later as he sent back Kamran Akmal for 27 to put Pakistan in deep trouble.

Earlier, on Day 4, An intriguing day`s play at Dunedin came to an end with New Zealand struggling at 147/8 with an overall lead of 244 runs over Pakistan.

New Zealand started the day by wrapping up the Pakistani innings quickly, with Bond announcing his return to Test cricket with a five-wicket haul. In reply to Pakistan’s 332 runs, the Kiwis started the second innings disastrously by losing 2 quick wickets with no runs on the board.

It was Ross Taylor who bailed them out with a patient half century. Once he was run-out, they lost the plot completely and couldn`t find any answer to a tremendous spell of fast bowling by Aamer and Asif, who got the ball to reverse both ways.
