Sehwag achieved the milestone off 207 balls after becoming the first Indian to hit six double centuries.
Sehwag smashed his sixth double century off 168 balls as India looked towards making a big first innings score.
Sehwag's knock is the 38th double hundred by an Indian. Dravid has five double centuries to his credit while Sunil Gavsakar and Sachin Tendulkar have hit four each.
Sehwag's double century was studded with six sixes and 27 fours and his brisk scoring ensured that India would be calling the shots in the Test.
Indian batsmen completely dominated the first two sessions after bowlers packed up the Sri Lankan tail within 30 minutes early in the day.
If Sehwag will be able to add 16 runs to his 284 on the third day, he will become the first player to hit three triple centuries in test cricket. At the other end, Rahul Dravid was giving him company as he is on unbeaten 62 of 121 balls with 5 boundaries. They scored an amazing 183 runs of 34 overs in the post tea session. At one time it seems like they were playing in 20 twenty match as ball was disappearing in all parts of the ground.
Muttiah Muralitharan conceded 119 from his 20 overs and there was no mercy for him as his economy rate was more than five runs per over. Sehwag hits his 17th test century, Sehwag’s innings of 284 not out is the third highest score by a batsman in a single day behind Sir Donald Bradman and Wally Hammond. Sehwag also reached the landmark of scoring six thousand test runs in his brilliant 284 not out innings.
The fastest double century in test cricket scored by Nathan Astle of New Zealand, he smashed 200 runs in 153 balls in Christchurch 2001/02 versus England.
India are now well placed at 443 runs for the loss of just one wicket in the third and final test of the series. India lead the three match series 1-0.
